Week #4 Complete and Gear Review

Week #4 complete!  Only two more months until the big race!  Training is progressing nicely and so far I’ve been able to meet or exceed my training goals!  I was able to get out of the office early today for my run too (which is a bonus).  It’s time to start my weekend!

It rained all day.  I could have run on my treadmill today but I needed to get in at least one “rain run.”  I trained all last winter/spring for the 2010 Cincinnati Flying Pig half-marathon and it only rained on me once or twice during training.  When it came time for the race, it rained the entire time!  I developed a blister on my foot (which slowed me down considerably).  I figured that I’d double-layer my socks, strap on my shoes and grab my Gortex running jacket!

A lot of people thought I was a fool for spending $125 for a running jacket….  Well, for days like today it comes in handy!  It is an Adidas Adistar Gortex running jacket (pictured below).  This jacket is awesome!  It is made out of a lightweight, wind-stopping shell combined with taped seems and waterproof zippers.  It comes with a rain hood and the jacket is tapered (for nice fit) and vented.  The material is treated and repels rain water well.  I recommend spraying some waterproofing spray from time to time.  A MUST HAVE!

I took off for my 5 mile run and was able to stay off of the street 90% of the time.  There were some puddles of standing water on sidewalks that I had to negotiate, but it was kind of fun splashing through them (the jacket kept my torso warm and dry but my feet were completely soaked)!  I also came across several areas of runoff with erosion; I recommend avoiding these areas to prevent slipping in the mud.

Today’s run was at a much slower pace than usual but I had to compensate for sore/tired legs and traffic on wet roadways…..  I am satisfied with my run overall.  I still think that I have a shot at a sub-2 hour half-marathon but right now it is too far out to be completely certain.  I doubt that I can break the 2 hour mark but will try my best.

In conclusion, I’d like to leave you with some important safety tips for running in the rain.  Dress in layers (from thermal wicking material up to water repellent outer shells).  Wear a hat (or skullcap) and gloves to keep your head and hands warm.  Wear visible clothing/markers (IE reflective gear).  Most rain gear has built in reflective material, so that is a bonus.  Protect your electronics!  In my previous gear review, I mentioned a couple of pieces of gear that make my running more comfortable (and enjoyable).  Those items are somewhat waterproof (to protect my investments).  And don’t forget to completely dry out your shoes post-run; mildew/mold can build up and ruin your expensive running shoes!

Always be cognizant of your surroundings: rain (depending on the intensity) makes it more difficult for drivers to see runners/walkers.  Use extreme caution when crossing intersections and always look both ways when crossing the street!  Don’t get into a contest with a vehicle; flesh always loses!  Thanks for the visit, have a nice weekend and be safe!

Happy running and God bless!

  1. I forgot to mention, have a"run plan" and make it available to your family, friends, or significant other..... This is important, just in case you don't return when you are supposed to (and we know where to look for you).
